About Penghu
The Penghu Islands are located in the Taiwan Strait west of Taiwan. Penghu County is surrounded by the sea. In the early days, its main industry was fishing. As fishery resources gradually dried up, it has now transformed into a tourism-based industry. Penghu is actually one of the places in Taiwan where people are most likely to get sunburned. Most activities in Penghu are conducted outdoors. Most people rent motorcycles, and riding a motorcycle to visit various attractions will leave you completely exposed to the outdoors. We strongly recommend wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when riding. Maybe you can also consider renting a car like we did and enjoy the air conditioning.

▲ 夜釣小管 Night Squid Fishing Experience : You can fish for small squid on the boat at night and eat a bowl of hot Xiaoguan Rice Noodles.
▲ 海上皇宮海洋牧場 Ocean Ranch : The boat sailed out to the sea and soon arrived at the ocean ranch. If you come at 16:30, you can see a beautiful sunset. Basically, you can eat oysters. There is a parent-child area for children to play.
Things to Do in Huxi Township (湖西)
▲ 奎壁山摩西分海 Kuibishan Recreation Area(depending on the tide) : You can walk on the S-shaped gravel trail in the middle of the sea, which only appears at low tide and is open only during safe passage hours. Opening hours may vary slightly from month to month and day to day. You can check the daily opening schedule here.

Things to Do in Baisha Township (白沙)
▲ 澎湖跨海大橋 Penhu Great Bridge : The bridge is 2,494 meters long and spans the waterway between Baisha Island and Xiyu Island. The water here flows rapidly, with the speed reportedly reaching 3 meters per second.
▲ 通梁古榕樹 Tongliang Great Banyan : The ancient banyan tree is more than 300 years old and is a magnificent sacred tree in Penghu. It has a total of 95 aerial roots, with lush leaves extending in all directions. The green shade covers the open space in front of the temple, forming a square for resting in the shade. It is a rare large banyan tree in the world.
▲ 中屯風車 Jhongtun Wind Power Area : These windmills rotating in the wind supply 12% of Penghu’s total electricity.
▲ 後寮天堂路 Penghu Houliao Paradise Road : This was originally an old wharf, and the Paradise Road trail has often become a secret place passed down by word of mouth among Penghu travelers.
Things to Do in Xiyu Township (西嶼)
▲ 大菓葉柱狀玄武岩 Daguoye Columnar Basalt : This majestic basalt wall is formed when the magma under the sea rises due to the terrain. After the magma cools and shrinks, the pentagonal and hexagonal rock columns produced by the rock mass break. This is a very popular must-see attraction in Penghu. This is a super popular Instagram spot.

Things to Do in Magong City (馬公)
▲ 西瀛虹橋 Xiying Rainbow Bridge : Xiying Rainbow Bridge is one of Penghu’s special attractions and is a great place for local people to go for a morning swim in the morning. As night falls, the bridge will be lit up with colorful neon lights such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple, creating a dazzling array of colors. You can watch the sunset and the beautiful scenery at the Guanyinting Recreation Area.
▲ 四眼井 Four-eyes Well : The peculiarity of the Four-Eyed Well is that water flows there all year round and will not dry up even in drought or without rain. The well is 5.6 meters deep and 2 meters wide. This was once the source of drinking water for residents in the Central Street area.
▲ 篤行十村 Duxingshi Village : Duxingshi Village is the oldest military dependents’ village in Taiwan. There is an old Japanese-style wooden house in the village, which has been renovated and transformed into a cultural and creative park. Local artists moved in and created various art installations.
▲ 澎湖海洋地質公園中心 Coral Reef Offshore Platform : Coral Reef Offshore Platform has a small interior space and free admission. You can watch a video about the geological origins of Penghu.
▲ 風櫃洞 Fenggui Cave : Fenggui Cave has formed a long and narrow sea erosion trench due to the impact of waves for many years. Whenever huge waves rush towards the cave entrance, there are waves sound in the cave. If the wind is strong and the tide is high, you can also see the spectacle of water columns spraying tides.
▲ 中央老街 Zhongyang Old Street : Zhongyang Old Street is the center of life for Penghu people. Now, with the development of Magong City, it has been transformed into an old tourist street.
▲ 澎湖天后宮 Mazu Temple : Penghu Tianhou Temple is the earliest Mazu temple built in Taiwan and is listed as a “national historic site.” It is located in Magong City and was built in 1604. It is the local religious center.

▲ 張雨生故事館 Chang Yu-sheng Memorial Museum : The late Taiwanese singer Chang Yu-sheng. The memorial hall retains his former residence and surrounding buildings as the overall exhibition of the story hall, which is divided into 4 themes.
▲ 潘安邦紀念館 Pan An Pang Memorial : The late Taiwanese singer Pan An-Pang. He becames famous with the song “Grandma’s Penghu Bay” and also sang many other songs that are still well-known today.
▲ 重光媽祖銅像 Penghu Matsu Statue : This is a 48-meter-high bronze statue of Mazu that was completed in 2022.
Things to Do at Night
There is no night market in Penghu, so you can only walk around Magong Street at night. You can also go to these two places to see the night view.

The Sanxian Tower overlooks the Bund Fishing Port and has a bay view like the town of Santorini. This place is not only beautiful during the day, but also beautiful at dusk and night.

The Best Month to Visit Penghu
Penghu’s peak tourist season is from May to September each year. There is a fireworks festival from May to July every year, and the island is crowded with people. During this period, the daytime temperature is above 30 degrees and the nighttime temperature is around 25 degrees, which is very suitable for outdoor water activities.
It is not recommended to travel to Penghu in winter unless you are going there specifically for windsurfing. Because Penghu is made up of open islands, strong winds will occur on the islands.
Where to Stay?
Most locals choose to live in Magong. This is the most convenient because this is the most lively urban area in Penghu. You’ll have access to all the restaurants and attractions in town, and you’ll save on cab fares after a night of drinking. Magong is also the ferry departure port for island hopping tours.
How to Get To?
The most convenient way to get to Penghu is by plane. There are regular flights from many cities (Taipei, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan Kaohsiung, Kinmen) in Taiwan every day, and all of these flights land at Magong Airport in Penghu. If you live in Taipei, flying from Songshan Airport is very convenient as you can even take the Taipei MRT to Songshan Airport (BR13 Exit 1).
By Airplane: Songshan Airport ↔ Penghu Magong
Round trip fare: about NT$4500 (60 minutes)
By Ferry: Chiayi Budai ↔ Penghu Magong
Round trip fare: about NT$2000 (90 minutes)
The ferry option is cheaper than flying. But if you live in Taipei like me, it will take longer to get from Taipei to Chiayi, and the ferry ride is not very comfortable. If you get travel sickness, you may want to take the tablet 30 minutes before you board the ferry.
